Donald Trump: The Effect of Continued Scandal

It’s just one week until Donald Trump is inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States. Trump never seems to be out of the headlines, but this week has seen the President-elect under fire more than usual. With A-list celebrities publicly criticising him, his team’s apparent desperation for inauguration performers, alleged ‘fake news’ and the leak of the Russian dossier, Trump is reacting the only way he knows how – Twitter.

We used our emotion analysis tool, Emotics, to analyse over 6,000 mentions of Donald Trump online to uncover how people felt about the President-elect on the day of election announcement compared to today, a week before inauguration.

The impact of the recent scandal has led Donald Trump’s Adorescore to fall 31 points to 14. The main high intensity emotions that drive this low score is anger and sadness. Sadness is driven by those who are disappointed at his outbursts on Twitter regarding actress Meryl Streep and the mocking of a reporter’s disability while campaigning. Anger is mainly drawn from Trump’s recent dishonesty regarded alleged links with Russia.

We took a further look into the scandals from this week below.

Trump vs Hollywood

The week started with Meryl Streep publicly calling out Donald Trump during her Golden Globes speech for his mocking of a reporter’s disability during his campaign run. She said:

“It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, I still can’t get it out of my head, because it wasn’t in a move. It was real life. It was the moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modelled by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life. Because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing”.

Trump hit back at Meryl, unsurprisingly via Twitter saying:

Shortly after, other Hollywood stars spoke out about the president to be, including George Clooney who stated, “Aren’t you suppose to be running the country?!”, in regards to Trump’s Twitter attacks on celebrities.

Donald Trump’s had many run-ins with celebrities and is rumored to be struggling to get any credible performers for his inauguration. Only a former “America’s Got Talent” contestant Jackie Evancho, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Radio City Rockettes dance group are listed to perform. A stark contrast from Obama’s star studded inauguration with performers such as Aretha Franklin and Beyonce and guests including Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey. Stars such as Moby and Charlotte Church have publicly announced their refusal to perform when asked by Trump’s people. Both responded via social media.

Trump lashed out on Twitter.

Trump vs ‘Fake News’

This week news of a 35 page intelligence dossier was released containing allegations by Russian spies about close links between Trump’s team and the Kremlin, as well as revealing compromising sexual details regarding the President-elect. The dossier is said to contain compromising material gained by Russian spies secretly recording audio and video footage of Trump from his stay in the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Moscow.

At a press conference this Wednesday (11th Jan), Trump dismissed the claims as “fake news” and the work of “sick people”, but is this enough to put an end to the whole debacle?

Republican senators, John McCain and Lindsey Graham, have been pushing for a thorough investigation into the Russian hacking.

The President-elect was outraged by the allegations and took to Twitter again to voice his opinions.

The difference in Adorescore between November and today is substantial. The recent scandals have led to a significant decrease in joy and trust in the soon-to-be President.  So with all of this scandal circulating the man who will be named President of the United States next week, there is no doubt his presidency will be marred by controversy.

I guess we’ll just have to keep an eye on his Twitter account for updates.
